Winemaker Notes

Primitivo Nigredo 2020 is a robust and full-bodied red wine that showcases the depth and richness of the Primitivo grape. The grapes are sourced from old vines in the Gioia del Colle area, known for its calcareous soils and significant diurnal temperature variations, which contribute to the wine's complexity. After hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by aging in a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels. The wine exhibits intense aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, and spices, with velvety tannins and a long, persistent finish. Serve at 18°C (64°F).

The Story

The story of Tenute Chiaromonte begins immediately after the official recognition of the Primitivo vine.

A small family-run company, a passion for the land that has never subsided and carried on with pride and commitment. One winter evening, a buyer peeps at Nicola Chiaromonte's door, interested in his Primitivo wine. That man changed his life.

In the same year Nicola, the last descendant of the family, takes the reins of the company with courage and perseverance and begins to produce the wine that would have made him proud of his land and origins.

Nicola Chiaromonte today, with the help of his friend and entrepreneur Paolo Montanaro, manages Tenute Chiaromonte which includes over 60 hectares of vineyards and centuries-old olive groves, all cultivated according to organic methods.

Today, Cantine Chiaromonte, situated in the heart of Puglia's Gioia del Colle region, is a winery deeply rooted in tradition and dedicated to the cultivation of the Primitivo grape. The "Muro Sant'Angelo" vineyard, from which this wine derives its name, is renowned for its old vines and unique terroir. The combination of altitude, soil composition, and climate in this area creates ideal conditions for producing Primitivo wines of exceptional quality.

The winery's commitment to traditional viticulture is evident in their meticulous vineyard management and winemaking practices. By focusing on low yields and careful selection of grapes, Cantine Chiaromonte ensures that each bottle reflects the true character of the Primitivo grape and the distinctive terroir of Gioia del Colle.
