Winemaker Notes
The Bakkanali K is an IGT Toscana red wine produced by Bakkanali, a winery located on Monte Amiata in Tuscany. This wine is made entirely from Sangiovese grapes, sourced from a 3.5-hectare vineyard in the Poggioferro area. The vineyard, situated at 600 meters above sea level, grows in soils composed of marl with carbonaceous and limestone rocks. The vines are 20 years old, and the estate is in the process of converting to organic farming.
The winemaking process follows a natural approach, using indigenous yeasts for fermentation. The grapes undergo destemming and crushing, then ferment in stainless steel tanks to preserve their freshness and purity. Aging also takes place in stainless steel, ensuring a clean, fruit-driven profile.
The Story
Bakkanali is a small yet ambitious winery founded by Sebastian Nasello, a well-regarded winemaker with experience at Le Ripi in Montalcino, and Ugo Fabbri. Their vineyards are located on Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano that influences the character of their wines with its unique terroir. The winery is known for its commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, with a focus on high-altitude viticulture that enhances the elegance and structure of their wines. Bakkanali pays tribute the the fun and wild parties they used to throw with copious amounts of wine and friends around.
The Bakkanali K embodies the essence of Sangiovese grown in a volcanic, high-altitude environment, resulting in a wine that is fresh, mineral-driven, and expressive of its unique terroir - an up and coming region with still very few winemakers, but pioneers.
