Winemaker Notes
The Etna Rosso Valcerasa is a distinguished red wine produced by Azienda Agricola Alice Bonaccorsi, located on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. This wine is crafted from a blend of 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio grapes, sourced from vineyards situated at elevations between 700 and 900 meters above sea level. The vines, some of which are over 80 years old, are cultivated using traditional bush-training methods on sandy, volcanic soils rich in minerals. The winery adheres to organic farming practices, ensuring the grapes are free from chemical residues and rich in natural yeasts essential for the winemaking process.
In the cellar, the winemaking approach is natural, avoiding the use of chemical additives. Fermentation and maceration occur on the skins in stainless steel tanks, followed by maturation in older barriques. This process allows the wine to develop complexity and softer tannins before release. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F).
The Story
The history of the Bonaccorsi winery dates back to 1763, with the family's original estate located in the Val Cerasa area, known as the "Cherry Valley," on Mount Etna's eastern slope. In 2000, under the guidance of Alice Bonaccorsi and her husband Rosario Pappalardo, the winery relocated to Contrada Croce Monaci in Randazzo on the northern side of Etna. Over two decades, they expanded their property from 3 to approximately 18 hectares, focusing on cultivating indigenous grape varieties and maintaining a strong commitment to biodiversity and organic practices.
Alice's father, Vincenzo Bonaccorsi, was a physician who passionately tended to the vines with the same dedication he offered his patients. In 1996, Alice encouraged her father to take winemaking more seriously, leading to their first release, which showcased the unique terroir of their vineyards. After Vincenzo's passing in 2003, Alice became the sole proprietor, continuing the family's legacy of producing high-quality wines that reflect the distinct characteristics of Mount Etna's terroir.
