Winemaker Notes
Basca by Pedra Niedda Tenute is a red wine that embodies the wild and rugged essence of Sardinia’s Mandrolisai region.
The grapes for Basca are sourced from century-old, bush-trained vines grown on rocky, granitic soils at high altitudes. Winemaking follows a low-intervention approach, with fermentation occurring spontaneously using native yeasts. The wine is aged in a combination of stainless steel and neutral oak, allowing it to develop complexity while maintaining freshness and vibrancy. On the nose, Basca reveals intense aromas of ripe red berries, dried Mediterranean herbs, and a hint of spice. The palate is structured, with firm tannins and a deep mineral core. Notes of black cherry, plum, and wild fennel lead into a long, slightly balsamic finish.
The Story
Pedra Niedda Tenute is a young winery founded by Enrico, a Tuscan wine enthusiast, and Susanna, a native Sardinian. In 2018, they decided to restore Susanna’s family land in Sini, Sardinia, which had been left uncultivated for years. They planted their first vineyard in 2018 and their second in 2019. Enrico, with a degree in Agricultural Science, has extensive experience in Italian and international winemaking and manages the vineyard and winemaking operations. Susanna, with a background in Tourism Management, takes care of communication, marketing, and sales.
