Winemaker Notes

The Armentario 2016 is a distinguished red wine produced by Cantine Carpentiere, located in Corato, within the Puglia region of Italy. This wine is classified under the Castel del Monte Nero di Troia Riserva DOCG appellation, highlighting its adherence to strict quality standards and its origin from the esteemed Castel del Monte area.

Crafted exclusively from the Nero di Troia grape variety, the Armentario 2016 undergoes a meticulous vinification process. The grapes are hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and quality. Fermentation occurs at controlled temperatures, allowing for the preservation of the grape's intrinsic flavors and aromas. The wine is then aged for an extended period, with a portion maturing in large oak barrels and the remainder in stainless steel tanks. This combination of aging vessels imparts complexity and balance to the wine, harmonizing its robust character with refined elegance.

The Armentario 2016 presents a deep, rich color indicative of its concentration and depth. On the nose, it offers an intricate bouquet of dark fruits, subtle spices, and floral undertones, characteristic of the Nero di Troia grape. The palate is full-bodied and well-structured, featuring flavors of ripe blackberries, plums, and hints of licorice. The wine's tannins are firm yet polished, leading to a long, satisfying finish. Serve at 18°C (64°F).

The Story

I will never forget the time I first tried this Nero di Troia 2018 wine. It was unlike any other wine I had ever had. Immediately my mind tried to find a resemblance with another wine. It was kind of like a Pinot Noir, but more floral. Then I stopped, realizing how silly it was to try to make it taste like a familiar grape. It was Nero di Troia, such a unique grape which radiated with roses and bitter honey.
